The Greatest Profession

When I’ve been asked what I’ve professed to do, I have given many answers: student, serviceman, salesman, economist, college professor, consultant, businessman, and now retired. Which profession, of all possible professions, is the greatest?

I think the apostle Paul had the greatest profession,

"The slave of God and messenger of Jesus Christ", (Titus 1.1).

He described his job as "... being sent to bring faith to those God has chosen and to teach them to know God's truth -- the kind that changes lives..." To me that is greatest profession!

Pastors are called to a profession like Paul’s and they should be the most happy, well adjusted, fulfilled people on earth! Our life on earth is but a short phase in our eternal existence and Pastors get to spend all of their time doing good and preparing people for the eternal phase in life.

Pastors play an important role in our lives. We go to them to be married. We call on them during a crisis; to visit our sick, for marriage counseling, an on and on. We ask them to dedicate our children and bury our loved ones and finally ourselves. We go to them for the great events of our lives. We go to them for weekly encouragement. And sometimes we neglect and ignore them.

We expect them to stay away from worldly entanglements so they can teach and counsel us about eternal matters.

Some character requirements for being a pastor are

1Ti 3:1-7 MSG If anyone wants to provide leadership in the church, good! (2) But there are preconditions: A leader must be well-thought-of, committed to his wife, cool and collected, accessible, and hospitable. He must know what he's talking about, (3) not be overfond of wine, not pushy but gentle, not thin-skinned, not money-hungry. (4) He must handle his own affairs well, attentive to his own children and having their respect. (5) For if someone is unable to handle his own affairs, how can he take care of God's church? (6) He must not be a new believer, lest the position go to his head and the Devil trip him up. (7) Outsiders must think well of him, or else the Devil will figure out a way to lure him into his trap.

The people that measure up to this standard and who are called by God to be Pastors are a special group of people.

I’ve never been called to be a Pastor but it must be exciting to be selected by the most intelligent, loving, powerful, personality in the universe to be an ambassador for His Son! Wow!
