Almighty God
When I was growing up my dad loved to tell stories about how when I was a baby he would tease me as I was nursing. He would recount the events with love in his eyes and happiness on his face. It seems that about two thirds of the way through my meal he would flip mothers nipple from my mouth and then watch me dive for it as he acted like it was his turn.
As our two sons grew up I too enjoyed teasing them during the most satisfying times of their day.
I have watched as our grand children have had their hunger pangs satisfied at their mother's breast. Their attitudes would go from hungry screams to happy coos when that warm tender flesh touched their lips.
Almighty God provides that same peace and satisfaction for adults.
When Abraham was 99 years old the Lord appeared to him and said, "I am the ALMIGHTY God; walk before me, and be thou perfect." The words translated Almighty are El Shaddai. The El signifies the 'Strong One'. The qualifying word Shaddai comes from the root word 'shad', the breast. Shad, when used alone, in the Old Testament invariably refers to a woman's breast.
El Shaddai therefore primarily means 'the breasted'. God then is the Nourisher, the Strength-giver, the Satisfier, the One that pours Himself into believing lives. As a baby is nourished, strengthened, quieted, rested, and satisfied at its mother's breast so El Shaddai is the Strength-giver and Satisfier of His people.
Almighty God! Those words have a satisfying effect when we realize that God introduces Himself; as tender as a mother's breast. He is 'All Sufficient' for our needs, and wants us to be as satisfied as a nursing baby in His presence and kingdom!
With that understanding of who God is, it is much easier to accept His call:
"...I am the ALMIGHTY God; walk before me, and be thou perfect." Gen. 17.1
This name gives a new dimension to the phrase, 'God is love'. El Shaddai is Jesus as He walked the earth forgiving businessmen, IRS agents, prostitutes, religious leaders ... anyone that would accept Him.
It is impossible for printed words to express the joy, happiness, peace, and satisfaction that comes from putting ones trust, future, current circumstances, family, government, job, safety, everything we are and shall be into His care.
I cannot think of a situation - NONE - when I would be better off out from under the care of a God that knows everything, is everywhere, that created all things, that existed from eternity past and into eternity future. This God says He wants to satisfy my soul's desires like a baby's desires are satisfied at his mother's breast!
That kind of God wants us to walk before Him and be perfect! He wants the very best there is for each of us – what is better than perfect?.
If there is a better deal than this in the universe, I have not heard about it!
